FLU SEASON 2013-2014

Influenza or flu is a contagious respiratory illness cause by influenza viruses.  Flu can cause mild to severe illness and serious complications of flu can result in hospitalization or death.  The best way to prevent flu and to keep from spreading it to others is to wash your hands often, cover your cough, stay home when you are sick and get vaccinated each flu season.

This season’s flu vaccines will protect against the influenza viruses that research has shown will be the most common during this season.  You should get vaccinated as soon as vaccine is available, and ideally by October.  Influenza vaccines are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older.

There are trivalent vaccines that protect against 3 different flu viruses and  quadrivalent vaccines that protect against 4 different flu viruses. There are several vaccine options available:

·       Traditional flu shot

·       Nasal mist

·       Intradermal shot

·       High dose shot

·       Egg-free shot

Influenza vaccinations are offered at several different locations throughout your community.  They can be obtained through your health care provider, your local public health office, urgent care centers, pharmacies and other chain stores.  Always check with your health care provider to determine which flu vaccine is right for you.
