Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program Update

What happened in 2005-2006?

Over the past year the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program has accomplished quite a bit:

Nine community grants aimed at primary prevention were awarded totaling just over $9,000.00.  These went for various projects from the "Red Bandana" program to school based interventions.  Final reports of these projects appear as though they had been quite successful.  If you would like information about some of the programs, call us and we can get contact information of the communities who ran a particular program you may be interested in. 

During the February 2006 legislative session an educational awareness for the legislators, their staff, and families was offered based on “knowing your numbers”.  This was done in partnership with United Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehabilitation department and the American Heart Association.  Of the 34 total personnel who utilized this offer, 30 were legislators and 4 were staff members.

 

In partnership with the Wyoming Health Council, the “Red Bandana” program was updated to include diabetes as a major CVD risk factor.  A pilot program was offered to women in the Cheyenne community over two Saturdays.  This was attended by 17 women from the community.  

 

In excess of 1,000 educational pamphlets were mailed to citizens, clinics, and Public Health Nurses throughout the state.  These pamphlets were used for patient education, seminars, and health fairs.

 

The CVD Coalition was reformed in late 2005 with their first meeting in March 2006.  The Coalition is divided into workgroups.  Each workgroup is currently in the process of drafting a Wyoming Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Plan.  The plan is scheduled for release in early 2007.

Wyoming 5 A Day Program

The Wyoming 5 A Day Program is part of a nation-wide nutrition campaign encouraging Americans to eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily for better health. The program is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the Produce for Better Health Foundation. Research has shown that eating 5 fruits and vegetables daily reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses.

The Wyoming 5 A Day Program recently has been awarded money from the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Wyoming to develop a 5 A Day cookbook. The goal of the 5 A Day cookbook is to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among children and adults. The 5 A Day cookbook will also serve as a resource for healthy dietary practices and behaviors by providing tips on food selection, preparation, and physical activity.

What is a serving?

• A medium piece of fruit
• cup of raw or cooked fruit or vegetable
• 1/4 cup of dried fruit
• 6 ounces (3/4 cup) of juice or
• cup cooked beans or peas (lentils, pinto
  
beans, kidney beans)

5 points to remember:
1. Eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day
2. Eat at least one Vitamin A rich selection, such as sweet potatoes, carrots, or
    cantaloupe every day
3. Eat at least one Vitamin C rich selection, such as oranges, grapefruit, or
    tomatoes every day
4. Eat at least one high fiber selection, such as apples, dried beans, and whole
    wheat products every day
5. Eat cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage
    several times a week
